Teenage Drivers at Higher Risk for Car Accident Injuries

July 21st, 2017

Teen drivers

Car accidents involving teenagers are becoming a major concern in the US. Over the past five years, more than 1,600 people have been killed in crashes involving inexperienced teen drivers. Statistics show that there has been a ten percent increase in teenager-involved car accident fatalities in 2015.

There are several reasons why teenage drivers are at higher risk for car accidents. Teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 are the most vulnerable to car accidents because of their inexperience.

Distracted Driving

Teenagers have a tendency to interact on their smart phones while driving. They are also likely to fall prey to other distractions while driving like texting and talking with their passengers. Six out of ten accidents among teenagers are caused by distracted driving.

Seat Belt Neglect

Teenagers are the most negligent age group when it comes to buckling their seat belts while driving. Research conducted in 2015 revealed that 60 percent of teen drivers were killed in car accidents because they were not wearing their seat belts. Teen accident fatalities would be greatly reduced if teenagers always buckled their seat belts when driving.

Lack of Judgement

Research has shown that teenagers are less likely to be able to recognize a dangerous situation while driving and tend to underestimate potentially dangerous circumstances. They have also been shown to lack judgement when critical decisions need to be made in order to avoid a collision.

Teenagers are inclined to speed while driving. This is the cause of almost 30 percent of fatal crashes involving teen drivers. Additionally, they may often drive too close behind a vehicle and not leave enough space between themselves and the vehicle in front of them.

Driving Drunk

Drinking causes reduced muscle coordination, poor judgement, impaired reasoning and memory loss. Studies have shown that when intoxicated, teenagers are at higher risk of being involved in a car accident than adults in a similar situation. They are also more likely to misjudge their ability to drive while intoxicated.
